Back Cove’s Popular 37 is Reborn
The original Back Cove 37 was launched in 2009 as the company’s flagship yacht of the time. In the more than eleven years of production for the first generation 37, over 200 hulls were delivered to customers. The model’s success helped give birth to the Downeast 37, which features an open cockpit design and single-level helm deck and cockpit sole, providing owners and guests great versatility and a smooth transition between activities.
In 2020, the production molds for the Back Cove 37 were showing their age due to boatbuilding wear-and-tear. At this time, the Back Cove design team seized the opportunity to revive the 37 rather than scrapping it. They took the time to upgrade it with the newest equipment and technology while maintaining the Downeast character and charm that made the 37 such a great success. The first-generation boat enjoyed over a decade of production and owner feedback that was used to update the design and advancements seen in the new second-generation 37.
More than Mark II
Now dubbed the Back Cove 372, this reborn model is full of fresh details that earned it a new designation. With several enhancements and updates, the new 372 has been tailored to today’s cruising and boating lifestyles, without sacrificing any of the classic character and charm that made the original 37 such a tremendous and long-standing success.
Every part of the 37 was examined and resulting updates were implemented for the 372—even for systems and parts of the boat that largely go unseen. For example, the new 372 features a more efficient 24-volt DC electrical system which boasts less copper weight, thus reducing overall weight of the boat. This upgraded electrical system will also boost run time on electrical equipment such as the bow and optional stern thrusters.
The glass package has been updated throughout to include fixed-glazed pilothouse windows complemented by a center-opening windshield. The aft salon bulkhead is composed of mainly glass including a new salon door to port, and a unique bi-fold window to starboard. This fitting swings open and out of the way for increased airflow and heightened guest interaction between the salon and cockpit.
At the helm, operators will appreciate the new black windshield liner and upholstered helm pod that dramatically reduce glare. New materials at the helm also offer greater durability and stain resistance and there is increased space for every owner’s favorite toy: more navigation electronics.
The new 372 offers a choice between two engine brands, both rated at 600hp and complemented by a 7” display as standard equipment. These engine options were a direct result of customer feedback and behavior and include a Cummins QSC 8.3 or a Volvo Penta D8 diesel. Although no official figures have been released as of publication, owners can expect a top end approaching 30 knots from either of these single screw options.

Further updates include a new aft-facing cockpit seat to starboard, complete with a folding armrest and drink holder. Down in the cabin, owners and guests will enjoy a reconfigured head with expanded medicine cabinet, sizeable over-sink mirror, and redesigned shower stall.
With so many updates and advancements, a portion of the 372 does remain unchanged. Afterall, if the formula works, why alter it? The two-stateroom, galley-up design remains the favored layout configuration. A plush L-shaped dinette aft of the helm and the adjacent matching settee also carry over from the first generation BC37.
As the all-new Back Cove 372 makes her way down the production line, it is refreshing to realize Back Cove did not simply scrap something great because it was getting long in the tooth. And although a lot has been upgraded from the original, there are some things that endure on. The most important of which are the beautiful wood finishes, exceptional durability and Maine craftsmanship found in every Back Cove yacht.
